What do you think of when you hear the words “grilled cheese?” Maybe it conjures up images of childhood or a warm meal your mom made for you when you were sick. Or maybe you think of a simple snack you made yourself in college. The grilled cheeses you’re imagining were probably delicious but fairly simple. At Grilled Cheese Society, our goal is to take that comforting classic and transform it into something new and exciting.

We love Portland, and we’re proud to serve such a vibrant community. Our grilled cheeses are comforting, delicious, and fresh, and we know Portland locals and visitors alike will fall in love from the very first bite.

Who We Are

Grilled Cheese Society is a restaurant chain concept under the Nextbite brand umbrella. Our food is fresh and made to deliver. One of the unique things about us is that we operate out of a cloud kitchen. This means that we don’t have a physical dining room, but rather we are a kitchen that makes food intended for delivery. Since delivery is all we do, we can ensure that your order is prepared quickly, correctly, and arrives as intended.

Our theme is inspired by 1920’s America. We take inspiration from the age of Art Deco, jazz music, and bootleggers. However, our flavor combinations are nothing like what Jay Gatsby would’ve eaten so long ago. We took the classic grilled cheese, which was actually invented around this time period, and modernized it with bold, inventive ingredients.

Our goal is to bring delicious food and amazing service to the people of Portland. We love this community, and we’re extremely proud to serve you.

Why We Love Portland

When we decide where to open our restaurant locations, we make sure we’re choosing places with a great sense of community and culture. We knew Portland would be the perfect place for us to call home because of the people, the culture, and the amazing food scene. Just like Portland, we think weird is amazing.

Portland’s food scene is highly influenced by its proximity to Willamette Valley, which offers restaurants in Portland access to tons of high quality, fresh ingredients. Portland chefs aren’t afraid to experiment and get inspired in non-traditional ways. The restaurants of Portland take great care to source quality, craftsman ingredients, and that inspires us to do the same.

There are so many iconic dishes associated with Portland, and new local favorites are popping up every day. From fried chicken to pizza to doughnuts, the list of foods visitors have to try when they come to town is endless. With the food scene in Portland being so varied, we knew we had to bring a restaurant concept that was as versatile as it was delicious.

Portland also has amazing bar culture, much in part to the huge amount of breweries located within the city. In fact, Portland was named the best city for beer drinkers, and it’s estimated that there are over 100 breweries in the Portland metro area. We love this about Portland because nothing goes better with a craft beer than a warm grilled cheese.

Why We Love Grilled Cheese

Because of our unique cloud kitchen model, we wanted to make sure when developing our menu that all of our food would work well when delivered to your doorstep. We also wanted to ensure we were bringing something that everybody could love and something versatile that we could elevate with fresh ingredients. And thus, Grilled Cheese Society was born.

Grilled cheese sandwiches have their roots in the same era that our theme is inspired by: the early 1920s. The idea of a sandwich made with melted cheese was popular in other cultures; for example, the French had been making croque monsieurs for years. But it wasn’t commonly made in the United States until this era.

In the early 1900s in America, two inventions came about around the same time: the bread slicer and factory processed cheese. Cheese and pre-sliced bread weren’t readily available to every American family before this time, so when these two products hit the market, combining them seemed like a no-brainer.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s and the war of the 1940s, grilled cheese sandwiches became a staple for struggling families, as they were simple and cheap to make. The term “grilled cheese” first showed in print in the 1960s. Before then, people cooked these sandwiches all different ways: in the oven, in a frying pan, even in waffle irons.

Fast forward to now, grilled cheese sandwiches are a staple for people all over the U.S. and around the world. They’re quick and easy to make, and the ingredients are affordable. While the traditional grilled cheese is amazing, we thought they had more potential. That’s why we decided to structure our menu around them. We loved grilled cheese, and we wanted to elevate it and bring it to our favorite communities around the United States.

Our Menu

Our menu is designed to cater to every palette, whether you’re nine years old or 99. We’ve stayed true to the classics while also updating and improving them. We’re passionate about quality comfort food, and we want to share that with Portland.

The Sammies

If you like your grilled cheese classic, grab the Classic Roosevelt, made with melted American cheese on white bread. Some people might call this sandwich plain, but we say that you can’t beat the classics.

If you love Mexican food and can’t get enough spice, try the Del Rio Caliente, made with chorizo, queso fresco, pepper jack cheese, roasted jalapeños, poblano peppers, red peppers, and Society Sauce on wheat bread. This sandwich was inspired by Tex-Mex fusion cuisine, and it’s one of our fan favorites.

Did you miss brunch but still want to enjoy some delicious breakfast food? We recommend the Bambino, which is served with two fried eggs, bacon, melted American cheese, tomato, and Society Sauce on white bread. Having breakfast foods for dinner is another childhood staple, and we wanted to combine that with grilled cheese to make the ultimate comfort classic.

For the mac and cheese lovers out there, we have The Gold Standard, mac & cheese with diced bacon on white bread. The ooey, gooey, cheesy pasta paired with the crisp bacon and toasted bread is absolutely to-die-for. The Gold Standard combines the two best cheesy comfort foods into one amazing dish.

You’ll be sure to go ape for the King Kong, made with mushrooms sautéed in sambuca cream sauce, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, American cheese & Society Sauce on white bread. King Kong himself would definitely climb back up to the top of the Empire State Building for this one.

If you like your grilled cheeses a little beefier, we recommend trying the Patty Andrews, with a hamburger patty, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, sautéed mushrooms & Society Sauce on wheat bread. It’s the ultimate mash-up of the grilled cheese and the cheeseburger.

If you love avocado toast, you’ll love it even more when it’s paired with melted cheese. Try the Shirley’s Temple, made with muenster cheese, avocado spread, tomato, and Society Sauce on multigrain bread.

If you like bleu cheese paired with crisp bacon, try the Blondie & Dagwood, complete with roasted turkey, bacon, muenster cheese, blue cheese crumbles, avocado spread & Society Sauce on wheat bread. The slow-roasted turkey compliments the muenster cheese in the best possible way, ensuring you’ll be satisfied.

Customize To Your Heart’s Content

In addition to our signature sandwiches, we also have a completely customizable menu that allows you to pick and choose exactly what you want on your sandwich. Simply pick your bread (we offer multigrain, wheat, white, or gluten-free). Next, choose your cheeses, from American, muenster, pepper jack, and queso fresco, and meats, like bacon, chorizo, ham, and turkey. If you want, add some veggies, like grilled onions, sautéed mushrooms, tomato, and avocado spread, and top it with some society sauce.

Snacks And Soups

Once you select your sandwich, make sure to check out our sides menu. Our signature side is Ghost Fries, which are crispy french fries fried to perfection, then topped with spicy ghost pepper seasoning. If you don’t like spice, we’re also serving up Onion Rings, Sweet Potato Tots, Mac and Cheese, and Mac and Cheese Bites, which are fried balls of mac and cheese made into a dippable handheld treat. The Mac and Cheese Bites come in three flavors: Classic, Bacon and Bleu Cheese, and Buffalo, all of which come with a side of Society Sauce.

Finally, complete your meal with a warm cup of soup. We offer Creamy Tomato and New England Clam Chowder. Whether you like to dip, sip, or use a spoon, a cup of soup makes the perfect accompaniment to a toasty grilled cheese.

Our goal when creating this menu was to provide classic comfort foods with a gourmet twist. We want to make sure everyone can order something they’ll love, no matter their age or taste preferences.
